WHY DO SOME KIDS HATE TO READ?
Maybe they never found a book that captivated them or maybe… THEY DON’T KNOW HOW. My reluctant readers were clueless on how to decode a word or syllabicate. They didn’t know what a consonant or a vowel was let alone the sounds each made. They were in middle school. Of course, they hated reading. Wouldn’t you? Here’s the good news: Some kids are wired differently. They need specific methods that can actually pave critical brain pathways that will help them learn and remember. Multisensory teaching just might be the solution. When plenty of opportunity is given to practice each reading component with lots of visual, tactile, and kinesthetic cuing, students soon discover that sounding out multi-syllabic words is like figuring out a video game. There’s a system to it. No, it’s not easy…at first. But if a teacher incrementally instructs a child and gives that child ample time to practice, magic will happen! I’ve seen it happen time and time again. Lots of kids learn how to read no matter what method was utilized. But those kids who NEED a more specific approach deserve one. It could be the difference between being a reader or not. |
